Ozempic is Novo Nordisk's brand of semaglutide, a once-weekly GLP-1 injection approved in Canada for type 2 diabetes. It is the product that turned semaglutide into a household name, and for years it was the only way to get the molecule. That changed in 2026.
As a brand, Ozempic now sits at the expensive end of the semaglutide market: roughly $250 to $310 a month at retail, with Costco typically lowest at around $252. Since May 2026, the identical molecule has been available as a generic for as little as $88 a month, and Novo has launched its own authorized generic, Plosbrio. That makes the practical question for most patients less 'Ozempic or something else' and more 'brand Ozempic or the same molecule for less.'

How it works
Semaglutide imitates the gut hormone GLP-1. It signals the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar rises, slows stomach emptying so meals are absorbed more gradually, and dampens appetite through receptors in the brain. For people with type 2 diabetes, the headline effect is improved blood-sugar control; reduced appetite and weight change are common secondary effects.
